OBDA (Octavio Barrera Design Atelier) works transversally between the fields of furniture, lighting, objects, spatial design and crafts. He likes to understand his practice as a way to (problem-solving) for individuals, agencies and institutions, moving away from a rigid or conventional design formula, working according to the values of each project, offering a wide variety of services from design and development through to fabrication and installation for in-demand projects at different scales by individual or collaborative making process, working regularly with architects, interior designers and private clients on commissions to create unique custom pieces, with a concious research and handcrafted approach.

Design and fabrication

Made to order handmade and custom built furniture, lighting and objects, from the initial idea to a final pieces for individuals and commercial assignments.


Fitout projects

Whether residential joinery or commercial spaces, working closely with other professionals, agencies or individuals to gain a deep understanding of the needs of each project.

Explorations and research

Self-initiated and in-demand crafts exercises and material experimentation in which through research on processes and old techniques developes prototypes and one-off pieces.

About

A canary-born designer and artist with a multi-faceted background spanning from skateboarding culture to creative direction in cultural projects such as Lava Circular. Octavio Barrera moved to Barcelona in 2010, since then he begins to show a special interest in furniture-objects and handcrafts, generally using wood and primary materials as a clear identity of its works.

After formed at EINA (University Center of Design and Art) 2014, he co-founded the independent collective Proyecto Islas Canarias later Hisla.org, as a starting point for the development of explorative projects focused on the folk Canary culture and crafts.

Nowadays working as a independent designer and cultural mediator, combining commisioned projects with self-initiated work and explorations, driven by spontaneous and hands-on approach where he produces one-off pieces and artifacts.
