Azorean Loop, Exploration Nº03

This exploration reflects about the importance of travel souvenirs and how this supposes an economic complement to the community through traditional crafts despite the decadence that this gift is currently suffering, because most of them are imported and made by people who work in unfavorable conditions to reduce the final price.

A self-initiated project exploring the traditional wicker craftsmanship and volcanic landscapes from the Azorean Islands we visited, with the vague idea of mixing it in some way. This explorative project ends on a unique pieces made with a wicker leftovers from João’s workshop. João is a local craftsman who has worked the wicker as the main material of his worklife for almost fifty years in a same way, this craft is getting lost because there are not a new generation interested on it.

The resulted pieces were made mixing wicker leftovers from his process with wood and a LED lighting system from my workshop in Barcelona. Also part of the pieces were dyed with a handmade natural volcanic dye of "lapilli" (little volcanic rocks) to give a tonality from the azorean landscape palette to the pieces.

The project tried to reflect on traditional crafts as a part of the history of each territory and how it can be useful as a tool of interculturality between different places in the globe.
